HHS seeks formal approval for emergency COVID-19 portal

The Department of Health and Human Services hopes to get formal, long-term approval for its Teletracking COVID-19 Portal, which it created on an emergency basis to collect daily COVID-19 data from about 5,500 hospitals. The portal allows hospitals to directly report coronavirus data requested by HHS on patients tested, bed capacity and supply requirements. The data then informs the government’s understanding of the spread and helps craft prevention and control policies. If the department can't earn formal approval of the Office of Management and Budget, it wouldn't be able to continue collecting data outside of its initial emergency standup. Dave Nyczepir has the scoop.

Army Futures Command's future under Biden

The commander of Army Futures Command wants to keep it thriving well into the future, even as new leadership arrives at the Pentagon. Gen. John Murray said Monday during a Center for Strategic and International Studies event that he hopes to continue pouring resources into the effort over the span of a multi-decade cycle, despite the bitter battles for money likely to play out in the coming years. “We just cannot afford to pass up this opportunity,” Murray said of the work started by the command, which includes network modernization for the Army. Cloud One, Platform One...now weaponOne

The Air Force is using the Advanced Battle Management System (ABMS) — its Internet of Things for war — to build digital twins of its weapons systems. Digital twins provide software-defined replicas of physical objects. And now under this project, called weaponONE, as data generated from weapons systems flows across ABMS’s architecture, it can feed those digital twin models, improving their accuracy and usefulness. What's the DIA doing with mobile data?

The Defense Intelligence Agency has been using smartphone location data purchased from commercially available databases, according to an intelligence memo obtained by CyberScoop. The DIA has been gathering the location data on both Americans and non-U.S. citizens dating back two-and-a-half years, and has sought to access Americans’ data and their past movements a total of five times, according to the memo. Sen. Ron Wyden indicated last week he will propose legislation meant to curb the practice. Shannon Vavra has more on CyberScoop.

Data management platforms play vital role in future of government work

The future of government work is playing out across three different theaters: work, workforce and the workplace. Each one of these areas is key to improving the delivery of services, according to Brian Chidester. In a new podcast, Chidester discusses data management platforms as a tool that not only plays a part in driving digital transformation but also represents a key factor in attracting talent into public service.
