CIA picks partners for cloud

The CIA has picked five tech giants to provide its cloud computing for the next 15 years. The agency recently awarded its Commercial Cloud Enterprise (C2E) contract to Amazon, Google, IBM, Microsoft and Oracle. While the agency wouldn't comment on the overall value of the contract, it could be worth “tens of billions” of dollars, according to earlier contracting documents. Billy Mitchell has more.

IPv6 shift is locked in

Within a few years, Internet Protocol version 6 (IPv6) will be the standard for all federal internet traffic. The Office of Management and Budget issued a memo Thursday requiring every agency to create a team of acquisition, policy and technical staff or another governance method within 45 days to enforce IPv6 efforts, issue and publicize a policy within 180 days, and ensure all new systems are IPv6-enabled by fiscal 2023. Moving to IPv6 will support end-to-end encryption and more secure name resolution. Dave Nyczepir has more from the memo.

A new Army CIO

The Army has named its first-ever civilian CIO. Raj Iyer has stepped into the role, replacing Greg Garcia, who was acting CIO after the retirement of Lt. Gen. Bruce Crawford this summer. Iyer's appointment comes after the Army recently split the role into military and civilian jobs. Lt. Gen. John Morrison is the deputy chief of staff of the G-6, Iyer’s military counterpart. Jackson Barnett has the news.

GSA hires a full-time CDO

The General Services Administration made the move recently to promote a Presidential Innovation Fellow to be its chief data officer. Payman Sadegh joined GSA's IT leadership team on Oct. 26, having only seven days earlier been named a PIF. Dave has this.
