Top Air Force IT official's focus hasn't changed in new role

Lauren Knausenberger may have gotten a promotion as the Air Force's top civilian IT officer, but her mindset hasn't changed. Now as the service’s deputy CIO, Knausenberger said she will be focusing on modernizing cybersecurity practices and bringing new technology into the department — as she was before, in her role as chief transformation officer. “IT is the foundation on which we do everything else,” she said Tuesday, pointing to specific technologies that she wants develop on top of enterprise IT platforms, including artificial intelligence-enabled systems, the ability to host larger and more usable data sets, and a “sensor net,” or interoperable layer of data that can be read from multiple sensors. Jackson Barnett has more on Knausenberger.

Cyber must keep pace with emerging tech

As new technologies emerge, they're going to disrupt established cybersecurity paradigms. So when things like quantum computing come along and invalidate some encryption methodologies in the next decade, federal systems must evolve to new practices, Deputy Federal CIO Maria Roat said Tuesday. Zero-trust security architectures and flexible, scalable cloud-solutions have become even more important so agencies can configure their platforms to capitalize on emerging technologies down the line, Roat said at the Billington Cybersecurity Summit. Dave Nyczepir has more from Roat.

These 7 mission-critical IT projects are very likely to fail

The Government Accountability Office is out with a new report on high-risk, mission-critical IT acquisitions around government — and the news isn't good. Seven of the 16 acquisitions GAO found to be mission-critical are "very at risk" of not being fully implemented. And many of these acquisitions cost hundreds of millions, if not billions, of dollars to implement, such as the Department of Defense's Defense Healthcare Management System (DHMS) modernization, which has a $10 billion price tag over two decades. More from Dave.

DIU, Google team up to fight cancer with AI

Google Cloud and the DOD are teaming up to bring artificial intelligence to the fight against cancer. Google will provide augmented reality microscopes with cancer detection tools at select military and veterans hospitals for research purposes only — at least at first. The idea is to help doctors see potential cancer cells with the assistance of AI algorithms that have been training on large datasets. By training machine learning systems to recognize the patterns of cancer, Google hopes to reduce the 5% error rate in cancer screenings. Read more.

Government CIO says agency success depends on digital investments

As Ted Ross sees it, a future-ready government needs digital services to operate at scale and speed during crisis. Post COVID-19, the city of Los Angeles’ ability to deliver services differed significantly. Those departments that remained operational thrived with cloud-based infrastructure, and those shut down during the initial pandemic still had legacy processes. There is a push to streamline processes and reinvest in modern service delivery. Listen to the full conversation.
