The need for a national cyber director

In the wake of the SolarWinds hack that has compromised at least seven federal agencies, experts are stressing the importance of a national cyber director role within the incoming Biden administration. In particular, the role could prove instrumental in preparing for future emergencies like the one at SolarWinds — one of the most serious incidents of digital espionage in U.S. history — by ensuring more even implementation of the National Cyber Strategy across departments. Biden stresses modernization after SolarWinds breach

President-elect Joe Biden has his attention on the SolarWinds hack as well. He told reporters Monday that it needs to be a national priority to modernize U.S. defenses against the capabilities of adversaries. "We have to be able to innovate, to reimagine our defenses against growing threats in new realms like cyberspace,” Biden said. Sara Wilson has this one.

Drones play big role in future of networked warfare

As the DOD looks to develop a future battlefield dominated by networked warfare, small drones will play a critical role in that. The services have had some trouble bringing that vision into reality, however, because the existing marketplace has matured in a way that effectively has shut out the DOD. And ultimately, it will depend on the software architecture and networks drones operate on to get there. Jackson Barnett has more.
