The JAIC needs more help from the top

The RAND Corp. came out with a congressionally mandated report Tuesday highlighting widespread challenges that the Pentagon faces in its adoption of artificial intelligence. The report finds that the Department of Defense is ambitious in its plans for its Joint AI Center but it will need more resources and organizational support to scale AI across the department. “The DOD recognizes that AI could be a game-changer and has set up organizational structures focusing on AI,” said Danielle Tarraf, lead author of the report. “But currently the JAIC doesn’t have the authorities or resources it needs to carry out its mission.” Billy Mitchell has more from the report.

Technology Modernization Fund to get additional $25 million

The Technology Modernization Fund is set to get another $25 million top-off. The current version of the proposed 2020 spending bill calls for the additional funding, bringing the TMF’s total to $150 million received since its inception in fiscal 2018. This current $1.3 trillion spending bill faces a Friday deadline for passage to avoid a government shutdown. However, both chambers are optimistic they will pass it and send it to the president’s desk this week. Tajha Chappellet-Lanier explains the TMF appropriation.

FDIC CIO Howard Whyte resigns

Another federal CIO has announced his departure. Howard Whyte, who has served as CIO of the FDIC since October 2017, will leave the agency Jan. 3 to pursue a role in the private sector. Deputy CIO Sylvia Burns — who was formerly the CIO of the Department of the Interior — will take over as acting CIO in Whyte’s absence. Read more on Whyte's departure.
