Marine Coders help corps catch up with modernization

A small group of Marines is looking to drive modernization within the force through open-source software projects and training. Called Marine Coders, the group's efforts are tied to advancing guidance recently put out by the corps' top officials to better take advantage of Marines' time by automating away rote, time-intensive tasks. So far, Marine Coders has taken on small challenges like formatting documents, building out listservs and finding ways to get basic software training to personnel. But as the group grows and works to become an officially recognized organization, its founders anticipate taking on bigger problems. Jackson Barnett has the story.

Now in phase 2 of the project, the department issued $50,000 awards to companies to help agencies weight past performance criteria depending on their needs in areas, like cost control or business relations, before AI gathers such information. Since it was created in 2009, no two people have performed the job the same, as each one has maintained different focuses and initiatives around American technology. In a special feature, FedScoop takes a look at the role of the U.S. CTO, the accomplishments of those who held the title and how the expectations can change when the White House has a new occupant. Tajha Chappellet-Lanier has the story.

Virtual workspaces boost hiring capabilities, says former SBA deputy CIO

Guy Cavallo shares that during the pandemic, the Small Business Administration staff were able to complete about 95% of their work remotely with the help of virtual work capabilities. If HR practices and management styles can adapt to a new working culture, Cavallo predicts that agencies can reach out to a larger talent pool beyond Washington, D.C., to meet their IT hiring needs. “That’s a tremendous benefit to everybody involved, including the citizens,” he says.
