More than new financial management standards

The Treasury Department is leading the federal government's efforts to modernize financial management shared services. In doing so, the department has realized that this massive undertaking is about a lot more than creating new governmentwide standards. Because core financial management systems share data with so many others inside an agency, they have to seamlessly integrate with all that technology, or else any cleanup is more complicated than the installation. FedScoop spoke with the head of Treasury's work as a quality service management office, Fiscal Assistant Secretary David Lebryk, about the latest in the development of the new financial shared service. Dave Nyczepir spoke with Lebryk.

Space Force speeds up acquisition

The U.S. Space Force wants to be the most digital branch of the military from the start. And to get there, the force's leaders realize, acquisition cycles must be sped up to keep technology current and relevant. That's why Chief of Space Operations Gen. John Raymond has delegated top acquisition authorities to offices in the field rather than the top brass. He said officers in the field closer to the operations of space systems should be the ones leading purchasing to inject speed into the force. Jackson Barnett has the scoop.

Founding DIB members depart

The Defense Innovation Board has lost some key members, including its founding chair Eric Schmidt. During a public meeting in which the board broadened its cadre of subcommittees to include a new space panel, Schmidt and others — such as Code for America founder Jen Pahlka, LinkedIn co-founder Reid Hoffman and Aspen Institute founder Walter Isaacson — received a farewell and offered some closing recommendations. During the meeting, Mark Sirangelo, entrepreneur scholar in residence at the University of Colorado Boulder, took over as its new chair. Jackson has this one too.

Leveraging a crisis to build a future-ready Air Force

Government modernization efforts have been going on for years. But like many things, it takes a crisis to really move forward with velocity, says U.S. Air Force Deputy CIO Lauren Knausenberger. There wasn't a whole lot of appetite for the adoption of virtual workspace capabilities among leaders in the Pentagon prior to the pandemic. Today, however, they are pushing the envelope to get collaboration tools and AI capabilities at scale. Building foundational capabilities are imperative to bring efficiency to a future-ready force. Reducing costs for DOD applications and data in the cloud

Defense Department agencies and their mission partners can work on projects in a DOD-authorized cloud environment almost immediately — and at significantly lower costs — by using a program called milCloud 2.0. The fit-for-purpose commercial cloud program, managed by GDIT, sits in a multi-tenant, Impact Level 5 cloud environment within DISA facilities. The unique arrangement allows DOD project teams to bypass much of the red tape and added costs. Hear more from Brian Whitenight.
