USDA has 8 assistant CDOs

While some federal agencies are still hashing out their chief data officer role, the U.S. Department of Agriculture not only has a department-level CDO but also assistant CDOs across its eight mission areas. The move came after USDA recognized it had a desire for more data insights, CDO Ted Kaouk said Tuesday during an SNG Live panel. “I think that it’s actually provided us with a lot of agility on the technology and infrastructure side, as well as having the appropriate connections to the business to make it happen,” Kaouk said. New AI consortium for first responders

The Department of Energy, Department of Defense, the White House and Microsoft have joined together for a project to provide artificial intelligence-enabled systems for first responders. Called the “First Five Consortium” — in reference to the adage that the first five minutes in a crisis are the most critical — the project aims to have the different organizations “share lessons learned” and work to deliver technology. “The collaboration will include both sharing of best practices as well as commonly shared data training and develop code for algorithms,” a spokesperson for the consortium told FedScoop. “Participants have agreed to make datasets, infrastructure and related resources available.” Jackson Barnett has the news.

DISA looks to expand milDrive

The DOD wants to expand both its cloud service offerings and endpoint security to continue supporting mass telework. The Defense Information Systems Agency hopes to make milDrive a “one-stop-shop” for any storage needs, with a focus on the network’s edge. Specifically, DISA wants to get services, tools and other cloud-based products to users so they can continue to work virtually as the DOD looks to replace its virtual environment in the coming months. Army Brig. Gen. Matt Easley on initiatives to support a future-ready force

The COVID-19 crisis sped up Army Futures Command’s cloud initiatives. Army field hospitals — and their logistics units — needed a better situational awareness to understand the future threat and to get supplies, personnel and equipment to the appropriate facilities. We understand that moving technology, systems and data into a cloud environment is important for better insights that support our soldiers serving the mission, says Brig. Gen. Matt Easley.
