An exclusive interview with Lt. Gen. Bruce Crawford

The Army could soon be the largest single user of Microsoft's Teams collaboration tool, CIO Lt. Gen. Bruce Crawford told FedScoop in a recent interview over videoconference. This scaling of Teams and other collaboration tools is a result of Army's ability to adapt and innovate during the early days of the pandemic. That same agility also led to the Army being able to scale its cybersecurity and network capacities as soldiers shifted to staying safe while working remotely. “I think the COVID-19 environment actually created some opportunities to accelerate some of the ideas that we had and to rapidly accelerate the rollout of capabilities,” Crawford said. They've got all the tech they need. What's next?

John Bergin, deputy assistant secretary of the Army for financial information management, has two questions for industry: “How are we managing the right people? How are we growing the right talent?” Answers to those questions will go a lot further than pitches on the latest-and-greatest applications, he said during a virtual AFCEA event. For any tech challenges that pop up, Bergin wants to explore IT-as-a-service (ITaaS) models that contract-out the overall management of systems. Ultimately, he wants “partnership,” not just providers. “We have to look to you guys to give us advice,” Bergin said. What that means, primarily, is advice on getting more out of the people he already has. Jackson Barnett has more from Bergin.

The toughest choices for the White House

The federal government is often faced with tough regulatory choices that could be a matter of life and death for some Americans. Reopening the country amid the coronavirus pandemic is one of those choices in which the nation's leaders must balance the potential of additional lives lost with the economic cost of keeping stay-at-home orders in effect. The latest episode of the Gov Actually podcast features legal expert Cass Sunstein — who also was a senior adviser to President Obama — to discuss how the White House manages this perilous balancing act. “It’s very normal, and it’s surreal” to weigh the cost of an American life, Sunstein says. The unspoken part of the Pentagon's 5G strategy

The Department of Defense says in a new strategy document that 5G wireless broadband coverage is a “critical strategic technology” that private industry must aggressively develop with geopolitics in mind. To be more specific: The military wants to work with telecommunications companies to ensure the U.S. is ahead of China on the technology. The strategy does not mention China or companies like Huawei by name, however. “[T]hose nations that master advanced communications technologies and ubiquitous connectivity will have a long-term economic and military advantage,” the nine-page document states. Jackson has this one, too.
