An exclusive chat with David Shive

The General Services Administration has faced minimal disruption during the coronavirus pandemic. And because of that, CIO David Shive said his office has been able to keep its focus upon ramping up digital transformation. In an exclusive video interview with FedScoop, Shive details his office's pandemic response efforts, how it's keeping the pedal down on transformation and what is coming next for GSA IT. Gov Actually talks reopening the U.S.

Gov Actually is back once again, this time with an episode focused on the only thing on everyone's minds: the pandemic and when things will be back to normal. In this episode, hosts Dan Tangherlini and Danny Werfel reflect on how social distancing has changed their lives during the pandemic and discuss the nation’s impending shift back toward normalcy. In particular, they focus on the role the federal government plays in all of this, which has so far been pretty limited as state and local governments respond on the frontlines. Listen now.

Deepfake risks in DHS biometrics system

The Department of Homeland Security is developing a modernized biometrics system for storing and processing digital fingerprints, facial images and iris scans. But that system, called the Homeland Advanced Recognition Technology (HART) system, has partial and unmitigated privacy risks, from those posed by deepfakes to unintended sharing of sensitive data, according to an assessment released recently. The system's biometric guidelines "will recommend that data collectors use liveness detection devices at the point of collection in order to minimize the impact of deep fakes,” reads the assessment. Dave Nyczepir has more on DHS's biometrics.

COTS removed from CMMC

Officials behind the Department of Defense's Cybersecurity Maturity Model Certification (CMMC) made a small but meaningful update to who will be required to achieve certification. Suppliers that only provide commercial-off-the-shelf products will not need to be certified under the program, according to its website, which was updated. The change comes after months of DOD and CMMC officials saying that every single DOD contractor and subcontractor will need certification. The new multi-level cybersecurity standards will require DOD contractors to receive third-party certification to be awarded DOD contracts — but apparently not for COTS providers. Jackson has the latest on CMMC.

Former 18F staffers help states with software

Two former employees of 18F want to help state governments save time and money replacing legacy IT systems with modern technology. Robin Carnahan and Waldo Jaquith, who both recently left 18F, launched the “State Software Collaborative," designed to allow similar agencies in different states to procure, develop and maintain software solutions together. “Our theory is that up to 80 percent of what states do is the same,” Carnahan said. “And there will be some customization for changes in policy among states, but most of it is quite similar.” Read about it on StateScoop.
