CISA gets official shared-services designation

The Department of Homeland Security's Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency was named the first official quality services management office (QSMO) on Monday. This means CISA was formally designated by Office of Management and Budget as a central shared-services provider for cybersecurity across the government. The agency has been approved to provide security operation center (SOC) and vulnerability management standardization, as well as Domain Name System resolution. “We plan to leverage successes and lessons learned from programs like Continuous Diagnostics and Mitigation and the National Cybersecurity Protection System to deliver high-quality, cost-effective shared services to federal agencies,” CISA's Bryan Ware said. TRANSCOM has used AWS to host its information and applications up to the secret classified level since 2018 under a $13.9 million contract with ECS Federal as the managed service provider. It had planned to move to the Pentagon's Joint Enterprise Defense Infrastructure (JEDI) cloud environment, which was awarded to Microsoft, but continued delays have forced the command to figure out other options. Billy Mitchell has more on the solicitation.

SBA corrects cyber deficiencies during pandemic

The Small Business Administration's Office of the CIO has had its hands full lately. It's faced with scaling services and building out new portals for small businesses in need of financial help during the coronavirus. And on top of that, CIO Maria Roat said her team has also been working to shore up its cybersecurity after an SBA Office of Inspector General report released last month found persistent weaknesses in the agency’s risk, configuration and identity and access management. Meanwhile, scammers are trying to money from small businesses by spoofing the SBA in emails, CyberScoop reported Monday. Read more on SBA's efforts.
