Siddiqui leaves HHS after CDO shakeup

Mona Siddiqui announced she will depart the Department of Health and Human Services after serving as chief data officer in the Office of the CTO since 2017. The move comes as HHS sorts out its compliance with the Foundations for Evidence-Based Policymaking Act, which requires all CFO Act agencies to appoint a nonpolitical CDO. Department leadership determined that the position was different from Siddiqui’s, with Chief Information Officer Jose Arrieta stepping into the new CDO role in an acting capacity until one is hired. “Serving at HHS during the last three years has been an enormous privilege,” Siddiqui wrote in her farewell. “Working with a committed team that has felt a tremendous sense of purpose and mission has made this journey transformational not just for HHS but for each one of us engaged in driving this work forward.” Dave Nyczepir has more on Siddiqui's departure.

VA looks to streamline use military discharge data

For many years, the departments of Veterans Affairs and Defense have been working to improve their data sharing. In the latest example of this, the two are working together to accelerate the authoritative use of digital military discharge data through the DD 214 form for veterans services. “We’re moving toward a future state where veterans don’t need to present the DD 214,” said Kshemendra Paul, chief data officer at VA. “And it takes time to work through all the policy linkages and then to organize all the different dimensions: the IT bits, the budgeting bits, the business process reengineering bits, the work with regulations that define each of the benefits that VA offers.” Dave has this one too.

The VA preps a 'balanced scorecard'

In other VA news, the department is working on a new way to track its progress in digital transformation. CIO James Gfrerer said this week that his office is close to launching a “balanced scorecard” to measure the success of the VA‘s various digital transformation efforts, to include the modernization of its electronic health record, medical logistics supply, human resources and financial management systems. His office is about 80% complete in development of the scorecard, Gfrerer said. “So we’re going to get a lot more focused around those measures, those metrics, those outcomes around the specific projects and start to be a bit more deliberate on what programs are succeeding or not.” Billy Mitchell reported on VA's transformation progress.
