State's overseas cloud pilots

The State Department is working on pilots at overseas posts to allow them to customize their business applications in the cloud. Brian Merrick, director of State’s Cloud Program Management Office, told FedScoop that the department just ended the discovery phase at one unnamed pilot location and is planning additional pilots in 2020. “The goal really is to make sure that we can manage a cloud-based environment that will allow us to provide the posts the local configuration capabilities they need to be able to deliver to their business customers, while doing it at an enterprise scale, securely, with a single identity,” Merrick said at the Cloudera Data Cloud Summit. “And with a single contract and funding model so that we don’t have the overhead costs.” Dave Nyczepir has more.

AWS will ask court to pause work on JEDI during protest

Amazon Web Services will ask a federal court to order a stoppage of work under the Department of Defense's JEDI cloud contract until its protest is settled. Lawyers for AWS will motion the U.S. Court of Federal Claims for a “temporary restraining order and/or preliminary injunction to prevent the issuance of substantive task orders under the contract,” which went to Microsoft, according to a joint status report published Monday. If granted, the motion would prevent any meaningful work to be done under the potential $10 billion contract until the lawsuit is settled. Billy Mitchell takes you inside AWS's motion.

The key to the IC's modernization success

According to CIO John Sherman, partnerships with internal and external stakeholders are key to IT modernization success in the intelligence community. Congress, America’s international allies, other federal agencies like the Department of Defense and intelligence community staff all count among these important stakeholders, he said Tuesday at the Cloudera Data Cloud Summit. On top of that, the 17 intelligence agencies and their respective CIOs play an integral role to that success. “I really see the leadership we provide — setting the vision, being the shepherd for the 17 agencies, as really the most important role we have,” Sherman said. Tajha Chappellet-Lanier has this one.

How federal agencies can improve data insights and lower storage costs

Following 2019 federal data management mandates — the OPEN Government Data Act and the Foundations of Evidence-Based Policymaking Act — agencies need to meet stricter standards for data management and sharing. That’s why experts say enterprise data intelligence tools will be an important resource for CIOs and CDOs to gain insights that fuel efficiency and better serve the mission. IT exec on challenges that keep agencies from building agility in development

Open source in cloud-native technology allows IT departments to break down development into smaller cycles. However, agencies must improve their knowledge management to build more agility. That means finding where knowledge is buried, centralizing it and exposing it to deliver mission objectives more efficiently. Watch this conversation here.
