Election night’s other big winner? Twitter

President Obama won reelection, but Twitter may have won election night.

In what has been called the first “Twitter election,” the social media site saw more than 31 million election-related tweets over the course of the night, including 23 million between 6 p.m. and midnight EST.

The site peaked with 327,000 tweets a minute immediately following the announcement of Obama’s win. The picture Obama tweeted of him hugging his wife with the words, “Four more years,” became the most retweeted tweet in the history of the site.

“Twitter brought people closer to almost every aspect of the election this year,” said Twitter spokeswoman Rachel Horwitz. “From breaking news, to sharing the experience of watching the debates, to interacting directly with the candidates, Twitter became a kind of nationwide caucus.”
