Box has received authorization for its cloud platform to handle more sensitive Defense Department data, the storage and file-sharing company announced Wednesday.

The Defense Information Systems Agency granted Box a provisional authority to operate at the DOD SRG Level 4, meaning it can now work with sensitive, controlled unclassified DOD data in its Non-Secure Internet Protocol Router Network, or NIPRNet.

Specifically, SRG Level 4 by definition allows for the handling of non-critical mission information and non-national-security systems information, including personally identifiable information, protected health information, law enforcement sensitive information, critical infrastructure information and more.

Meanwhile, Box is also on its way to Federal Risk and Authorization Management Program High certification, which would allow it to handle highly sensitive data of civilian agencies. Box says its authorization process is prioritized through FedRAMP Connect and plans to complete it in “coming months.”

“These new security accreditations will allow the Department of Defense and Federal Civilian agencies to leverage box products and platform to manage sensitive, controlled unclassified information, including law enforcement sensitive data, export controlled information, and Federal healthcare information,” Sonny Hashmi, managing director of global government for Box, said in a blog post.

Box’s authorization is a timely one as federal agencies continue to prioritize IT modernization, primarily by moving legacy systems to the cloud. Hashmi, former CIO with the General Services Administration, emphasized the importance of that in his blog, saying “there is no better time than the present for government agencies to prioritize legacy modernization efforts.”

“Modern, secure cloud platforms, including Box, offer tremendous capabilities for agencies to quickly deliver mission outcomes, while reducing the cost and complexity of IT, and offer more secure architecture by design,” he says.

Box has made a concerted push to work with federal agencies in recent years, launching its Box for Government platform last May.
